CORNISH: THANK REPUBLICANS FOR STATE’S BUDGET SURPLUS

ST. PAUL – Happy days are here again for the State of Minnesota, as economists have projected Minnesota to benefit from a $2.2 billion surplus. Just four years ago, Minnesota faced a $4.5 billion deficit. State Representative Tony Cornish (R-Good Thunder) said prudent decisions in 2003 by House Republicans and Governor Pawlenty have put the state’s fiscal house in order.

“Hard work and fiscal responsibility brought us to this fortunate surplus,” Cornish said. “Naysayers might try to minimize or downgrade it, but we went from a record deficit to an admirable surplus and now we have to save and spend it with great caution.”

“Sometimes, after a period of hard times, when we get extra dollars for the budget we've had a tendency to just spend it,” Cornish added. “However, much thought has to be given instead of just throwing it into existing programs and agencies.”

“My thinking follows the Ronald Reagan thought that money is best spent by the average citizen rather than the government,” Cornish continued. “Therefore I believe that direct property tax relief is the best avenue to take, as that is where most of my complaints are centered on from the taxpayer. There is absolutely no guarantee that loading money into local government aid and county aid will reduce the property tax. A direct property tax rebate will.”

Cornish hopes the Legislature will take its time to debate the surplus logically and methodically while keeping the average citizens pocketbook in mind.
