CORNISH LOOKS TO SECURE FUNDING FOR WELLS DEPOT

ST. PAUL – State Representative Tony Cornish (R-Good Thunder) said he will introduce legislation next year that will attempt to secure development grants for the restoration of the Wells Depot.

“The necessary funding is already available,” Cornish said. “Its sitting in an account waiting to be used and I think the Wells Depot certainly meets the necessary criteria.”

When a tornado severely damaged the City of St. Peter in 1998, the Minnesota Historical Society awarded grants in the area known as Region 9 to replace or repair historical items that were damaged. St. Peter did just that, but it has now been determined that the city did not use all of the funds that were allocated at the time.

According to the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED), $120,000 remains in a Region 9 development account. DEED notified area officials that this money had not been spent, and recently met with the Wells Economic Development Authority and Rep. Cornish about redirecting this funding for the historical preservation of the Wells Depot.

“We were pleased that DEED brought this to our attention and is supportive of using the available funds for the Wells Depot,” Cornish said. “I plan to introduce a bill at the start of the 2007 session that will make this grant redirection happen. As Wells is a part of Region 9 and the project has important historical significance, I am hopeful we will be able to secure this funding next year.”
