NEWS RELEASE

CORNISH AUTHORS SPECIAL CRIME UNIT LEGISLATION

ST. PAUL – In order to clamp down on illegal immigrants that are performing crimes in Minnesota, State Representative Tony Cornish (R-Good Thunder) is authoring legislation that would create a Special Crimes Unit in Minnesota. Cornish said this unit will be able to better monitor non-citizens that are committing felonies in the state.

“The purpose of the unit is not to round up illegal immigrants,” Cornish said. “This specialized team would work with government officials to target those illegal immigrants that are a legitimate threat to public safety.”

If Cornish’s bill is approved, nearly ten agents would be hired and trained to work in the Special Crimes Unit. Some would serve as liaisons between federal, state, and local agencies and task forces; others would work as field officers where they could help investigate and apprehend illegal immigrants that are committing serious felonies.

“This bill is designed to go after illegal immigrants that are involved in human trafficking, drug crimes, assaults, and murders,” Cornish said. “Often times these crimes are committed against fellow immigrants, both legal and illegal. If approved, this legislation will protect immigrants rather than harm them.”

Cornish said his bill is being supported by the Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association, the Minnesota Sheriff’s Association, and the Minnesota Chiefs of Police Association.
