ST. PAUL – State Representative Tony Cornish (R-Good Thunder) said he was agreed with Governor Pawlenty that the state of the state is strong, prosperous, and hopeful. The governor gave his State of the State Address to the Legislature on March 9.
“To me, the most impressive state accomplishment is that we have taken a $4.5 billion deficit, erased it, and created a multi-million dollar surplus,” Cornish said. “And we did it without raising state taxes. That show we have been making the correct economic choices and that we are heading in the right financial direction.”
Governor Pawlenty also encouraged lawmakers to take action on his proposals in the areas of education, health care reform, job creation and environment. While Cornish is leery of some of the Governor’s initiatives because they carry large price tags, he does support many of his ideas that do not create a financial burden.
“I see nothing wrong with cracking down on illegal immigration, constitutionally defining marriage as between one man and one woman, and eliminating the marriage penalty in income taxes,” Cornish said. “We always appreciate his input on where Minnesota is at presently, and where he’d like to see it in the future.”
