LETTER TO THE EDITOR

AN INTERESTING VALENTINE'S DAY GIFT

Dear Editor,

On Valentine's Day I received a large envelope at my office in St Paul. Upon opening it, I found 15 large colored construction paper valentines from kids. I thought to myself that this was really nice, as they were addressed to me personally and I noticed the valentines were from the "Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Church in Mankato. However, upon examining them I found that they were either in support of gay marriage or in opposition to the "marriage amendment" which will be considered at the Capitol this year.

On one large valentine was the picture of two stick people with the words "Two Boys" below it and hearts over their heads while they were holding hands and wording that said, "All kinds of families are good!" Another one said "Two Girls" with hearts also over their heads.

Some of the letters said that they were "embarrassed to be in a country that is discussing deliberate discrimination-in violation of all our Constitution Stands for," while others compared the marriage amendment to civil rights and voters in Mississippi in the 60's. Other comments were made about it being "only Republicans" who are pushing the marriage amendment.

I tried to call each one of the parents and talk to them over the phone about these letters. This is what I found from talking to seven of the 14 couples. Here are their comments: "This is not a doctrinal church." "It's not just for Christians." "We don't recite creeds." “We accept all religions, Buddhist, Muslims and others." “There is a good chance that Jesus was gay and that doesn't bother me." "You know he hung around with only men all those years." "The Bible is full of contradictions and errors." "The Bible was written by only men; doesn't that give you a clue?" "Who knows where everyone comes from?" "Everyone goes to heaven, you don't have to know Christ to go to heaven, you just have to be sorry for what you've done and be a good person."

Three parents confirmed that this "valentine campaign" was done in place of Sunday school with parents taking part while the kids did the artwork. They were sent to me, Rep. John Dorn, and Sen. John Hottinger. I asked the parents if any sexuality or biological issues were discussed with the children and they told me "No, they are too young for that." They could be talking to the kids about that at home. I don't know. They did tell me that the main issue that was discussed was that it was a violation of their "civil rights." I told them that I had a problem with only one side of the issue being discussed before they sent letters to me and that it was misleading. I figured if they were going to address letters specifically to me at my office, I had that right.

I am neither a homophobe or a gay basher, but I wanted to bring this subject to light so that you can see that there really is a political agenda in this area and that you need to know what your kids are being taught and where. You are free to make up your own minds about this topic, but quiz your kids to see what they are picking up in the schools and churches.

Thank you,

State Representative Tony Cornish
