NEWS RELEASE

Beard Joins Minnesota House Small Business Caucus

ST. PAUL-- Representative Mike Beard, R-Shakopee, has joined the newly formed Minnesota House of Representatives Small Business Caucus. The bipartisan group will look at ways to enhance Minnesota’s climate for small businesses and entrepreneurial growth.

“A majority of our state’s jobs come from small businesses,” Beard said. “We’re going to get their input on what obstacles they see standing in the way of growth or what we as legislators can do to revive the economy.”

“I expect we will be doing a lot more listening than we will talking.”

The caucus will include 30 representatives – 22 Democrats and 8 Republicans including Beard.

Beard said he will bring a focus on energy issues to the caucus, especially the potential for short- and long-term job creation from repealing the state’s ban on new nuclear power facilities. Beard said he was pleased to hear that the Prairie Island Nuclear Power Plant near Red Wing, MN, was granted permission to increase energy production, but that sustaining real economic growth is going to require more base-load power production.

“Economic growth and energy production go hand-in-hand. Plus, we gain a lot of highly-skilled, well-paying jobs in when the energy sector grows,” Beard said.
