ST PAUL – State Representative Mike Beard [R-Shakopee] has been named Vice Chair of the Legislative Audit Commission (LAC), a posting which will last for the entire 86th session of the Minnesota Legislature.
The Legislative Audit Commission is a bi-partisan commission with six members from the House of Representatives and six from the Senate, equally divided between the majority and minority parties with membership being governed by state statute. The commission appoints the Legislative Auditor and selects topics for the Program Evaluation Division to review. It also periodically holds hearings to review audit and evaluation reports.
“It is an honor to be named Vice Chair of the Legislative Audit Commission and I look forward to working with the chairwoman, Senator Ann Rest,” said Beard. “Assuring that the state legislature can get objective and unbiased counsel from a non-partisan office charged with evaluating the work we do is critical to ensuring that Minnesota citizens are being well represented. Taking an active role in selecting the topics the Legislative Auditor will research is great way to show Minnesotans that we are accountable for our actions.”
In the past, the Office of the Legislative Auditor has reviewed and published reports on the state’s prison made products business, fraud and abuse in the Department of Natural Resources and the proper use of government resources in relation to campaign fundraising.
