NEW LAWS TAKE EFFECT JULY 1

Independence Celebration

Celebrate America's birthday with the settlers of Eagle Creek. Experience festivities of the 1800s by marching in a parade, playing croquet, throwing horse shoes, churning ice cream and much more. Defend the town's honor in a base ball match against the mighty Quicksteps (July 4th only). See live raptors from Richardson Nature Center (July 4th only: 11a.m. - 2p.m.). Gift shop and food available for purchase. $8.50 ages 12+; $7 ages 3-11 and seniors.
Several new laws took effect July 1, here is a brief list. For the full list, you can visit www.house.mn. Generally when the Legislature passes new laws they begin on July 1, August 1 or January 1 of the next year depending on how long it takes to prepare for the new law to take effect.
GOVERNMENT SPENDING
In order to help eliminate the budget deficit, most state agencies will reduce their budgets by 4 percent and constitutional offices will reduce their budgets by 3 percent. The Legislature cut its own budget by a combined $1.6 million.
CONSUMER PROTECTION
New laws protect the privacy of your Social Security number when used on mortgage documents and insurance applications. Also, a new law dictates that Social Security numbers cannot be sold for marketing as a legitimate business purpose.
BLOOD DONATION
A 16-year-old can now donate blood with written permission from a parent.
NO SCOTT COUNTY SALES TAX INCREASE
The sales tax will not go up in Scott County, though it will increase in five other metro area counties to pay for mass transit.
