We spend a lot of time talking about making sure our schools teach children the skills they need to start a career, but I think we’re missing one critical subject: finances. To that end, I’ve joined an effort to add basic financial literacy to high school graduation standards. With Social Security and Medicare facing serious long-term doubts, it’s critical that high school graduates know the basics about saving, spending and investing for retirement.
A group of Scott County legislators are teaming up to again go after funding for the regional public safety training center in Scott County. We successfully got the first round of funding in the 2006 bonding bill and we hope to get an additional $3.2 million in the 2007 or 2008 bonding bill.
Last Thursday I joined other legislators and local leaders at a Citizens League forum to discuss long-term transportation funding. It is crucial that we find a stable way to fund transportation. Gas tax revenues are predicted to fluctuate as mileage rates and alternative fuel usage increase and Motor Vehicle Sales Tax revenues are declining. The solutions we reach today will ensure the state can maintain the roads it has and build the roads it will need in the coming decades.

On Wednesday, February 21, Scott County Veterans Affairs will be hosting a community presentation to discuss issues around the reintegration of soldiers returning from war. The presentation will include addressing the needs of returning combat veterans and their families; raising awareness of the reintegration process commonly experienced by returning veterans; warning signs of post-traumatic stress disorder; and adjusting to civilian life after being a combat soldier.
Everyone is invited and I encourage you to attend. The presentation starts at 7 p.m. and will run until about 9 p.m. in the Savage American Legion Hall (12375 Princeton Avenue South) in Savage.
