BEARD NAMED TO LEADERSHIP POSITION

~Income tax relief passed in first bill out of the House~

ST. PAUL – State Representative Mike Beard, R-Shakopee, has been elected the Assistant Republican Whip by fellow members of the House GOP Caucus. The whip position brings with it the responsibility to build support for the major initiatives the Caucus will sponsor and support, as well as offering the Caucus response to other legislation.

Beard said the position is important for the GOP caucus because they need to reach out and form many different relationships in order to get their issues up for a vote.

“Traditionally the majority party gives precedence to its own members in terms of what bills receive committee hearings or come up for a vote on the House floor. As the whip I need to make sure our own caucus members support a bill and then reach out to see that it gets a chance to pass,” Beard said.

“It’s not really about promoting Republicans and attacking DFLers. It’s making sure they know and that the public knows we have our own ideas that we’d like to see come up for a vote. We aren’t going to roll over and play dead just because we’re out numbered. We were each elected by our constituents because of the principles we agree on and we intend to make sure our constituents get their voice heard.”

One issue already supported by the GOP Caucus and passed with unanimous support was House File 8, the federal tax compliance bill. This law change will result in $24 million worth of income tax savings to Minnesotans. The bill specifically targets tax deductions to people paying college tuition and teachers who purchase classroom materials at their own expense. Governor Pawlenty has expressed his support for the bill and is expected to sign in by the end of January.
