ST. PAUL -- State Representative Mike Beard, R-Shakopee, has been given a Legislative Achievement Award by the Design-Build Institute of America for his work in advancing design-build contracts in Minnesota.
In 2005, Beard worked with the Institute and the State of Minnesota to pass a law allowing the state to use design-build contracts in certain state government construction projects. According to the institute, design-build allows one entity to sign a contract for design and construction services on a project. This compares to the traditional approach of first contracting for a design and then contracting again for a construction company who can bring the design into reality.
“Design-build is used in many other states and helps them complete public works projects faster and with fewer taxpayer dollars,” Beard said.
Support for design-build contracts has been growing in the private sector for three decades. Combined with increased use in the public sector, design-build contracts accounted for $49 billion worth of construction projects, according to the Engineering News-Record.
