High School Page Program Offers Opportunity to Learn About Government First-Hand
State Representatives Rick Hansen and Joe Atkins invite local high school students to experience the legislature in action as part of the House of Representatives High School Page Program. This program allows high school juniors to spend a week at the Capitol in St. Paul meeting with state representatives and assisting members during legislative session.
"The best way to learn about government is not from a textbook, but to experience it first-hand," Rep. Atkins explained. "High school pages really get to be part of the Minnesota House for a week. Some pages have liked it so much, they've even gone on to run for state office," Rep. Hansen added.
Students selected for the program will meet individually with House members and discuss issues that matter to them, assist members during session, and participate in mock committee debates to inspire them to think critically about the issues facing our state. Students will also have an opportunity to meet with constitutional officers, members of the judiciary, lobbyists and members of the media. The Minnesota House of Representatives High School Page Program, now in its 31st year, is one of only three in the country, modeled after a similar program in the United States Congress.
Minnesota high school students in their junior year are encouraged to submit an application by December 15, and if admitted, will be assigned to participate for one week between March and May 2006 with other students from across the state.
