“All Star Steroid Law" Brings Together Country’s Stiffest Steroid Penalties in One Statute
Those convicted of crimes involving illegal steroids will face up to two decades in prison and a $250,000 fine under a new Minnesota law, believed to be the toughest penalty in the country for the sale of performance-enhancing drugs. The new law increases penalties for the use, possession and sale of illegal steroids, but comes down particularly hard on those selling steroids to minors – up to 20 years in jail and a $250,000 fine.
“This is the grand slam of steroid laws,” said State Representative Joe Atkins of Inver Grove Heights, the bill’s chief author. “We successfully combined the strongest steroid statutes from across the country to form an ‘All Star Steroid Law,’” noted Atkins.
“It is time to inject honesty back into sports, if not for the athletes themselves and the integrity of the game, at least for the sake of our kids and their health,” Atkins said.
The new law also updates and expands Minnesota state law, which previously banned only 10% of illegal steroids on the market. "Minnesota's steroid law needed bulking up," said Atkins. "This is like a steroid law on steroids."
Representative Atkins will be available for questions or further comment on Tuesday, July 12, 2005. Please call Elizabeth Emerson at 651-296-7175 to schedule an appointment.
