(ST. PAUL) — Today state Representative Joe Atkins (DFL – Inver Grove Heights) introduced a bipartisan bill establishing a Health Insurance Marketplace. The marketplace — frequently known as an exchange — would provide the state’s first and only competitive, online marketplace for consumers and small businesses to find the best health insurance plan to suit the needs of their family or employees.
The bill has bipartisan support and a powerful lineup of co-authors, including Rep. Greg Davids (R – Preston), Chair of the Taxes Committee; Rep. Jim Abeler (R – Anoka), Chair of the Health and Human Services Finance Committee; Rep. Joe Hoppe (R – Chaska), Chair of the Commerce and Regulatory Reform Committee; Rep. Tom Huntley (DFL – Duluth), DFL Lead on the Health and Human Services Finance Committee; and Rep. Erin Murphy (DFL – St. Paul).
“I’m pleased and proud to be joined on this bill by these thoughtful, bipartisan co-authors," said Rep. Atkins. “This shouldn’t be a partisan issue. This is a common-sense, Minnesota-made solution to not only improve our health care system, but to help create jobs. Every dollar a small business saves on health insurance is a dollar that can be put into growing a business and hiring more people.
“Some have described this as a Travelocity for health insurance. I think it is even better and more important than that, and I look forward to working with my colleagues to get it done.”
