(ST. PAUL) – Today, Governor Mark Dayton urged Minnesota lawmakers to move forward with designing and enacting a state health insurance exchange – a necessary component of the federal Affordable Care Act.
State Representative Tom Huntley (DFL – Duluth) and State Representative Joe Atkins (DFL – Inver Grove Heights) both serve on the Insurance Exchange Working Group.
“Creation of a state operated health insurance exchange is a common-sense solution to closing the disparity of those who can afford health care in our state, and those who cannot," said Rep. Huntley.
“Regardless of which party you belong to, it’s clear that health care costs are a hefty financial burden for many families in Minnesota. For many years, Minnesota has led the charge on effective health care reforms. Establishing this exchange now allows us the flexibility to design a model that will work best with the intricacies of our state, while providing an opportunity for more Minnesotans to access affordable, quality health care.”
“This is about growing businesses and growing jobs,” said Rep. Atkins, who is also a small business owner. “Creating a Minnesota-made marketplace for health insurance is about more than just saving money on health insurance. It’s about jobs.
“Every dollar a business like mine saves on health insurance is a dollar that can be put into growing a business and hiring more people. That’s why I want to get this done, why other small business owners want to get it done, why the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce wants to get it done, and why Democrats and Republicans ought to work together to get it done.”
