I had the good fortune of having several favorite teachers, but my first one was Mrs. Volkert. My first grade teacher, Mrs. Volkert made me want to go to school each day. Tiny, even frail, Mrs. Volkert, who wasn't much taller than me at the time, had the biggest heart of just about anyone I have ever met. She gave out hand-knitted hats to kids without hats, and hand-knitted mittens to kids without mittens. And she warmed us all with daily hugs, as we walked in each morning and just before we went home each day. Mrs. Volkert taught me to read, made me love to learn new things, and encouraged me to do my best on tests. Of course, she also gave out candy for good test scores, so that helped.
