Surrounded by a team of little league kids, state lawmaker Joe Atkins introduced legislation that will toughen penalties for those selling steroids in Minnesota.
“This bill sends the right message to Minnesota’s kids," Representative Atkins said, “We need to clean up professional sports and stop the growing use of steroids by our young athletes. Our current system for enforcing laws against these drugs is simply not as effective as it needs to be.”
The legislation will allow for tougher enforcement and more serious penalties for steroid offenses, by bringing Minnesota into compliance with Federal standards regarding performance-enhancing drugs. Currently, differences in the classification of certain steroids in State and Federal statutes have hampered efforts to properly enforce these laws. Similarly, these differences have led toward weak fines and sentences.
“We need to make sure that we are teaching our children about the values of good health and fair play,” Representative Atkins said, “and getting rid of steroids is an important part of that.”
