ST. PAUL, MN – According to a new report from the Lottery, over the last 20 years residents of Inver Grove Heights and South St. Paul have spent $64.5 million on state lottery tickets, including $40.4 million on scratch tickets and $24 million on lotto games like Powerball.
More than $14.5 million of those proceeds have contributed to Minnesota causes, including:
• $4.3 million to the Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund
• $9.3 million to the General Fund
• $860,700 to the Game and Fish Fund & Natural Resources Fund
Additionally, retailers in South St. Paul and Inver Grove Heights have earned $3.8 million in commissions and incentives since the first day of Lottery sales on April 17, 1990. The remaining $46.2 million in local lottery sales went to prizes and expenses.
“I was amazed at the figures," said state Rep. Joe Atkins. Atkins chairs the House Commerce and Labor Committee, which is charged with overseeing the Lottery’s operations. “What most impresses me about the Minnesota State Lottery’s operation is how low they keep expenses compared to other states, so more can be paid out in prizes.”
In 2009 alone, Minnesota State Lottery sales totaled a record $481 million statewide, delivering $119.6 million to state programs. Twenty local retailers sold $4.2 million in lottery products including $2.8 million in scratch games and $1.4 million in lotto games, earning $251,000 in retail commissions and incentives.
