ATKINS TO HOLD HEARING ON WAKOTA BRIDGE PROGRESS

ST. PAUL - State Representative Joe Atkins, Chair of the House Commerce and Labor Committee, has scheduled a hearing November 25 to examine progress made in recent months on the long-delayed Wakota Bridge project.

Early last year, Chair Atkins held a series of hearings to determine why construction of the Wakota Bridge was costing twice as much and taking twice as long as originally anticipated. The hearings came after construction on the bridge had completely stopped for 14 months during a MnDOT contract dispute with the general contractor. Atkins’ first hearings in January were followed by an in-depth six-month investigation by the House Commerce and Labor Committee into the cost implications, delays, and labor contract disputes associated with the project.

Because of Atkins’ inquiries and progress made at the hearings, construction has been back underway on the Wakota Bridge since early this summer. At November’s hearing, Atkins and members of the Commerce and Labor Committee intend to 1) receive an in-depth update from MnDOT officials about progress made on the bridge to date; 2) receive revised estimates for when the bridge will be completed; 3) determine exactly how much it will cost; and 4) gather any other information necessary to ensure the job is done as soon as possible.

The hearing on November 25 will take place at 9:00am in Room 5 of the State Office Building in St. Paul, Minnesota.
