The Minnesota Legislature passed a new law that provides disabled Minnesota veterans additional property tax relief. The Disabled Veteran Homestead Value Exclusion passed with broad, bipartisan support during the 2008 Legislative Session.
This new tax break provides a property tax benefit to qualifying disabled veteran homeowners by reducing the value of their home for property tax purposes by up to $300,000. To qualify, the homestead must be owned by the veteran, or the veteran and his or her spouse.
State Rep. Joe Atkins, who supported the bill, said it hit close to home for him. A young man who grew up next door to Atkins suffered a severe brain injury in Iraq. “Disabled vets like Kyle deserve our gratitude and respect," said Atkins. “We can never fully repay them for their service, but we can help make their lives just a little bit easier here in Minnesota.”
