State Rep. Joe Atkins was recently singled out by the Minnesota Senior Federation in appreciation of his property tax reform efforts. According to Marlowe Hamerston, Chair of the Senior Federation's Tax Committee, Atkins was recognized "for his efforts to reform Minnesota's property tax system for the benefit of not only senior citizens, but for all Minnesotans."
In the 2007-08 Legislative Session, Atkins introduced legislation to cap property taxes at no more than 1.5% of a taxpayer's income. Part of Atkins's legislation became law this year, but he said there is still more work to do. "For many families and senior citizens, rapidly rising property taxes are creating a very real crisis," said Atkins, "We have to do something, and soon."
Since 2003, property taxes have increased by over $2.3 billion.
