State Representative Joe Atkins is working with Neighbors Inc. for the 10th straight year to coordinate the Inver Grove Heights Days Parade Food Drive. The annual event collects nonperishable food items and school supplies for people in need throughout the community.
Since getting underway in 1997, the annual Food Drive has collected approximately 21,500 pounds of food for those in need in Inver Grove Heights. This year, food drive organizers are working together yet again to continue that tradition of giving.
"The outpouring of generosity from the people of Inver Grove Heights every year is amazing," said Atkins. "It truly is a reflection of the good and caring people who call this community home."
Atkins, who along with the City Council started the food drive when he was Mayor of Inver Grove Heights, credits the continuing success of the event to those within the community who make it possible every year.
"Neighbors Inc., Mayor George Tourville, the Inver Grove Heights City Council, Bester Brothers Moving Company, Cub Foods, BEST Foundation members, and all the volunteers who contribute to this effort deserve our gratitude for the good work they do every year," said Atkins. "Without their hard work and dedication, this important event would not be possible."
The parade begins on Saturday, September 8 at 11:00am. The parade route is along Cahill Avenue, from 65th to 80th Street. Rep. Atkins, his children, and other volunteers will be collecting food items along the parade route in grocery carts. All items collected will be donated to Neighbors Inc., to be distributed to families in need at locations in Inver Grove Heights and South St. Paul.
"We are very appreciative of all those who have contributed to this effort in years past," said Atkins. "I encourage everybody that comes to the parade this year to bring nonperishable food items, school supplies, or household items to contribute. Together we can make a difference for those in need in our community."
