ST. PAUL - The Minnesota House today overwhelmingly passed Rep. Joe Atkins' bipartisan legislation to protect Minnesota consumers from identity theft when dealing with foreign call centers. Atkins' bill requires foreign call centers to disclose their location if asked and to provide a U.S. based location to send private data, such as financial or medical information. It is designed to prevent identity theft.
"This legislation simply requires that foreign call centers tell the truth," said Atkins, Chair of the House Commerce and Labor Committee. "It enables consumers to make an informed decision before giving out private information."
Atkins' bill passed the House with wide bipartisan support, on a 93 to 39 vote. Sen. Dan Sparks has authored similar legislation in the Senate, which is the bill's next stop.
