SOUTH METRO LAWMAKERS INTRODUCE LEGISLATION CREATING 2,000 AREA JOBS

ST. PAUL - State Representatives Sandra Masin of Eagan, Shelley Madore of Apple Valley, and Joe Atkins of Inver Grove Heights are introducing legislation that will create 2,000 new jobs in the South Metro. Thomson West is planning on expanding its campus in Eagan. The lawmakers' bill would provide state tax incentives to compliment benefits offered by the City of Eagan to aid in construction.

"The economic benefit that Eagan and surrounding communities will receive from an expanded Thomson presence will far outweigh the initial costs of these incentives," said Masin. "We don't want to miss out on a golden opportunity for the south metro."

Officials from Thomson have promised that the new jobs will pay upwards to $70,000 per year and include full health insurance benefits.

"Thomson West already employs many of my constituents," said Madore. "Their announcement of new, high paying jobs is welcome news."

The bill's first stop will likely be the House Taxes Committee. Rep. Atkins is a key member of that committee.

"Thomson West is an important employer just across the border from us in Inver Grove Heights," Atkins said. "This is an important job-creating bill that deserves a hearing as soon as possible."

The Thomson West incentives are included in Governor Pawlenty's budget and Eagan Senator Jim Carlson is authoring legislation in the Senate.
