ATKINS FOCUSED ON PROPERTY TAX RELIEF

A $2 billion state budget surplus could mean help is on the way for homeowners facing big property tax increases. State Rep. Joe Atkins says property tax relief will be among the top items on his legislative agenda this session.

"Most Minnesotans once again had sticker shock when they opened their property tax statements this year," said Rep. Atkins. "It is a real crisis for many families, and particularly for those on a fixed income. We need to pass permanent property tax relief this session."

Atkins, who will chair the House Commerce and Labor Committee when session convenes January 3rd, says legislative leaders and the Governor already agree that property tax relief is a top priority for 2007. Atkins plans to introduce legislation that will provide permanent property tax relief to Minnesotans.

Atkins explained that the state budget surplus should allow for property tax relief while still addressing other key priorities.

"The state budget has gone through a huge turnaround since I was first elected in 2002," Atkins said. "Now is the right time for property tax relief and reform."

Representative Atkins has a long history of working to hold down property taxes. When he was the mayor of Inver Grove Heights from 1993 - 2002, the community’s property tax rate went from one of the highest to the third lowest in the state for communities of 20,000 residents or more.
