Just two weeks after being elected to his third term as State Representative for District 39B, Joe Atkins has been named chair of a powerful House committee. Atkins was chosen to chair the influential Commerce and Labor Committee. With chairmanships traditionally dictated by seniority, it is rare to chair a full committee as a third-term member.
"I certainly didn't expect to chair a committee this soon, so I'm surprised and very pleased with the appointment," Rep. Atkins explained.
Atkins called the new appointment a good fit with the district he represents. Beginning in January he will oversee a committee with jurisdiction over a broad range of issues related to the state's economy. The Commerce and Labor Committee will hear all business, insurance and banking-related bills. It will also decide on initiatives related to labor, consumer protection, privacy and identity theft, alcohol and gambling, and telecommunications.
Atkins is widely considered a leader in the legislature on commerce issues. In 2006, he was chief author of the Uniform Securities Act, a new law aimed at keeping Minnesotans safe from investor fraud.
Despite the large jurisdiction of the Commerce and Labor Committee, Atkins is not deterred by the increased workload and responsibilities. "I'm just looking forward to rolling up my shirtsleeves and getting to work," he said.
