State Representative Joe Atkins has launched a contest to honor the history of South St. Paul, one of the communities Atkins represents in the House of Representatives. The contest is composed of 16 multiple-choice questions about the city’s history. Entry forms can be obtained on Atkins’ website, www.JoeAtkins.com, or by calling 296-7175.
“South St. Paul has such a rich and colorful history," said Atkins, an Inver Grove Heights resident who was born in South St. Paul. “Fascinating people, interesting events - South St. Paul history has it all,” he said.
The contest was spurred by the theme for this year’s Kaposia Days celebration, “Our Town, Our Stories,” and by constituents who asked for it. Atkins held an Inver Grove Heights history contest earlier this year to honor that community’s 40th anniversary. It proved very popular. “We received hundreds of entries,” Atkins said, “and a lot of requests for a South St. Paul version.”
There are giant prizes for the winners. “Actually, they just get pizza with me. I’m not sure if that is actually a prize or not,” Atkins joked. “It is really just about having fun and calling attention to the community’s history.”
The winning entry will be the first entry received with all of the correct answers. Hints will be posted on Atkins’ website as the contest moves forward, until a winning entry with all of the correct answers is received. Contestants may enter as many times as they wish.
