State Rep. Joe Atkins is working with Neighbors, Inc., our local food shelf, again this year to hold the annual food drive during the Inver Grove Heights Days Parade on September 9. Now in its 9th year, the food drive was started by then-Mayor Atkins and the IGH City Council in 1997. Even though Atkins is no longer mayor, he still coordinates the food drive, which collects non-perishable food items and school supplies during the IGH Days parade for those in need in our area.
"The response to the food drive has been overwhelming," said Atkins. "We've collected roughly 20,000 pounds of food over the years."
"The real credit for the success of the food drive goes to all those who have helped - Mayor George Tourville and the IGH City Council members and other volunteers, and especially those who have donated," said Atkins.
The parade is on Saturday, September 9 at 10 a.m. The parade route is along Cahill Avenue, from 65th to 80th Street. All items collected are donated to Neighbors, Inc., which has locations in Inver Grove Heights and South St. Paul.
The donations come at a particularly good time for the food shelf. Neighbors, Inc. reports that food shelf supplies wane in late summer.
