Rep. Gene Pelowski (DFL-Winona) and Sen. Jeremy Miller (R-Winona) support a solution proposed this week by Minnesota Department of Transportation to resolve issues surrounding the replacement and restoration of the Winona Bridge. The proposal builds a new two lane bridge next to the current bridge so this important transportation artery will not have to be closed to traffic. Once the new bridge with a 12-foot bike pedestrian walkway is complete the current bridge can be restored to full and safe functionality. The plan allows for full traffic across the river and should be within the current budget.
“Senator Klobuchar, Senator Franken and Congressmen Walz, along with Winona Mayor Jerry Miller, City Manager Judy Bodway, City Engineer Brian DeFrang, Winona Chamber of Commerce President Della Schmidt and Board Member Joe Sherman, Southern Minnesota Regional Outreach Director Chuck Ackman, and Economic Development Director Marcus Schmidt, and the office of Wisconsin U.S. Senator Ron Johnson, should all be thanked for reaching consensus on the proposal,” stated Rep. Pelowski. “Governor Dayton, the Minnesota Department of Transportation, and its regional office in Rochester deserve a great deal of credit for working collaboratively with federal offices and the city of Winona on the agreed upon solution as well,” continued Pelowski.
“It is encouraging that Minnesota state agencies, federal agencies, the city of Winona, and elected officials from all levels of government came together to ensure that the needs of those crossing this essential transportation link were addressed properly,” said Sen. Jeremy Miller.
The two-bridge solution allows for construction of a new two lane bridge first and then traffic will switch to it while the existing interstate bridge is rehabilitated. When the project is complete, the existing bridge will carry two lanes of traffic out of Winona and the new bridge will carry two lanes of traffic into Winona.
