Joined by more than a dozen fellow lawmakers from Greater Minnesota, Representative Gene Pelowski called for Minnesota cities to have the right to raise local sales taxes to support local projects. Under current law, cities must get permission from the Legislature before raising sales taxes.
“It makes absolutely no sense that we need permission to raise money from our own people to spend on our own projects," Representative Pelowski said. “If the people of Winona want to tax themselves to build a library or make transportation improvements, I don’t see why anyone in the rest of the state should have any say over that.”
The proposal was sparked by debates over the construction of a Twins stadium in Hennepin County. Under the current stadium proposal, Hennepin County would require permission from the state to raise a 0.15% sales tax to fund a new facility.
Pelowski said that he wouldn’t support the stadium bill unless it is tied to the proposal to allow other cities the right to raise sales taxes. “Many places in the state need money for projects that are just as important to those areas as the stadium is to Hennepin County,” he said.
