Today the House of Representatives passed a measure authored by Representative Pelowski that authorizes Programs of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) in Minnesota. PACE provides a package of services to give seniors the ability to continue to live in their own communities, rather than in nursing homes.
Rep. Pelowski pushed the measure in order to allow a PACE to be established in Winona. The organizations participating in the Winona PACE will be Winona State University, Winona Health, Sauer Memorial Home, and Saint Anne of Winona.
“This opens up excellent new options for our seniors in Winona," Rep. Pelowski said. “Most people would prefer to stay in their own homes, but are unable to because they need the services provided in nursing homes. This would allow them to access the same services at home. I applaud the people at Winona State, Winona Health, Sauer Memorial Home, and Saint Anne’s for wanting to set up this program, and I’m very glad that the House decided to give them the opportunity.”
PACE works by setting up a team of service providers, who regularly meet and discuss the status of each patient. This ensures that each participant receives a full package of necessary care, and it also allows that package to change smoothly and quickly, as new services are needed. PACE also saves significant money, because it is more cost effective for people to live in their own homes than in nursing care facilities.
“PACE is a great idea for Winona and a great idea for Minnesota,” Rep. Pelowski said. “As legislators, we should always be looking for ways to save money and to improve the lives of our seniors. This measure does both.”
