Winona State University's social work students decided it was time to make the point about rising tuitions in a manner no legislator in St. Paul could avoid seeing. Twenty-six of Professor of Social Work Ruth Charles' students showed up at the Capitol to lobby the legislature today, April 4, more than half of them sporting bright yellow shirts saying, for all to see across their backs, exactly how much debt each has already accumulated pursuing their educations. They were lobbying for more state funding for higher education to stave off still another double digit rise in tuition rates. Their shirts show their debts running as high as $60,000. Rep. Gene Pelowski (DFL-Winona), in the dark sweater at the right edge of the group, had suggested the tee-shirt display last month in a meeting with the class shortly before Easter.
