Minnesota will celebrate 150 years of statehood in 2008. At its Sesquicentennial, the State of Minnesota will be celebrating its rich and unique history throughout the course of the entire year – beginning this January. As part of that celebration, the Minnesota Sesquicentennial Commission is sponsoring the "Capital For A Day" campaign.
Minnesotans across the state are encouraged to log on to the Sesquicentennial website at http://www.mn150years.org/capital4aday2.html and vote for their favorite city to be named "Capital For A Day." Nominations have come in from all over the state, and now it is up to voters to narrow the field down to five winning communities – one from each of Minnesota's five "biomes."
I strongly encourage all residents of Winona to log on and join the vote. This is a great opportunity to share the Winona story with all Minnesotans. Right now, Winona is leading the vote tally in our biome. Together, we can make Winona the next "Capital For A Day."
Southeastern Minnesota cities are included in the "Driftless Area" biome listed on the website. In that category, voters will have the opportunity to vote for one of the following cities: Winona, Minnesota City, Rushford, Wabasha, Rochester, Reads Landing, Lake City, or Caledonia. You are then encouraged to vote for your favorite cities in each of the other four Minnesota biomes. One vote is allowed per person, per biome.
Winning communities will be recognized during Minnesota’s Statehood Week, May 11th – 18th, 2008. These communities will work with the Minnesota Sesquicentennial Commission to plan activities and help raise awareness for their community. Activities could include any number of events including visits by Sesquicentennial Commission members, tours of the town, picnics, recognition of Sesquicentennial grant winners, or hosting civic engagement roundtable discussions.
You have until Monday, Nov. 26 to vote. So log on and vote today.
