WINONA, MN – For the 9th straight year, Winona students have been invited to participate in the National Issues Forum – a nonpartisan, nationwide network of locally sponsored public forums for the consideration of public policy issues. Winona is one of only two communities throughout the state of Minnesota invited to participate in the event, the other being St. Cloud. It is the only community in the state that has consistently participated in this annual event on a multigenerational basis, involving high school and college students, as well as senior citizens.
This year, the national event will be taking place on Friday, November 16, and will address the topic: The Energy Problem: Choices for an Uncertain Future. Winona Senior High School American Government students will join students from Winona State University and the Winona Senior Learning Community in exploring three possible solutions to the nation's energy problem: reducing our dependence on foreign energy, getting out of the fossil-fuel predicament, and reducing our demand for energy.
The American Government students and the Winona State students are both taught by Gene Pelowski, a teacher at Winona High School and a member of the Minnesota House of Representatives.
"These students and life-long learners will have the opportunity to weigh in on one of the most important issues facing our nation today," said Pelowski. "They will present and discuss the issues together in Winona using digital projectors before reporting their findings to the Ketterling Foundation in Washington D.C. via laptop computer."
The National Issues Forum will take place in the Common Room at St. Mary's Church in Winona from 8:30am to 11:45am. The public is invited to attend.
