To the Editor:
I am responding to David Delano's letter to the editor of Friday, August 3rd. Mr. Delano accuses me of being a "government employee double-dipping on salaries, benefits and pensions".
When I serve in the Minnesota House of Representatives my salary for the Winona Area Public Schools is deducted and I lose up to a half year of pay. Since the legislative pay is less than the pay I would have earned from the Winona Area Public Schools, my family sees a pay cut for my serving in the Minnesota House of Representatives.
My pension contributions from the Winona Area Public Schools are also lost and I have to buy back not only the contribution I would have made to my pension during the time I serve in the legislature but also the employer's contribution.
Public service is not a moneymaking endeavor. My serving in the House of Representatives has been a fiscal burden on my family. However, it is the choice my family has agreed to make for living in a democracy.
