ST. PAUL - The Minnesota House yesterday passed bipartisan legislation allowing charitable groups to save significant amounts of money. The bill, authored by Rep. Gene Pelowski (DFL-Winona), allows charitable organizations to buy into the state purchase plan - a plan that local governments use to purchase large quantities of office supplies and equipment ($500 and up) at state negotiated prices.
"The United Way of Winona approached me with this idea," Pelowski said. "It's only common sense for groups that do so much good work in the community to receive discounts on vital supplies such as telephones, file cabinets, and other office supplies."
After learning of the bill's passage, Beth Forkner Moe, Executive Director of the Greater Winona Area United Way e-mailed Pelowski and said, "Thanks for your support on the state shared purchase plan bill! It's so great to have people like you fighting for non-profits and the people they serve."
The bill cleared the House 131 to 2. With the Senate unanimously passing an identical version last month, the bill is now on the Governor's desk awaiting his expected signature.
