ST. PAUL - Rep. Gene Pelowski voted today along with 89 other lawmakers to begin putting Minnesota's transportation system back on track.
Pelowski said Minnesota's transportation system is on the verge of falling apart.
"The former Winona County Engineer stated it best, ‘In the 21st century Winona County is going from paved to gravel roads because we can no longer afford to support paved roads’, Cities and counties would see more state money for local roads. For Cities, Winona would see $98,674 more per year and La Crescent would see $24,898. On the county side, Winona County would receive an increase of $496,781 and Houston County would get $360,224 more." Pelowski said.
The bill includes a compromise 5-cent per gallon increase in the state gas tax to pay for the state's lagging transportation system.
"The conference committee saw that a 5-cent increase might be enough to override the Governor's expected veto," added Pelowski.
Rep. Pelowski said a gas tax increase would result in lower property taxes.
"Local regressive property taxes are paying for transportation improvements because the state can't fulfill its obligation to fund local transportation projects," Pelowski added.
The Governor has three days to either sign or veto the bill before it automatically becomes law.
