ST. PAUL - Rep. Gene Pelowski voted today along with 82 other lawmakers to put Minnesota's transportation system back on track. Pelowski said Minnesota's transportation system is on the verge of falling apart.
"MnDOT is broke," Pelowski said. "What little work it can afford to do amount to cheap band-aids."
The bill includes a 10-cent per gallon increase in the state gas tax to pay for the state's lagging transportation system. Rep. Pelowski said a gas tax increase would result in lower property taxes.
"It's ridiculous that seniors, who rarely drive, are paying higher local property taxes because the state can't fulfill its obligation to fund local transportation projects," Pelowski added.
Cities and counties would see more state money for local roads. For Cities, Winona would see $197,348 more per year and La Crescent would see $49,795. On the county side, Winona County would receive an increase of $993,563 and Houston County would get $720,447 more.
The transportation bill now heads to a conference committee with the Senate.
