ST. PAUL - Minnesota's transportation system would be put back on track under legislation passed by the House Finance Committee yesterday. The committee passed HF 946, a comprehensive transportation investment bill.
The bill includes a 10-cent per gallon increase in the gas tax to pay for the state's lagging transportation system. Rep. Gene Pelowski of Winona said the gas tax no longer carries the buying power it did in 1988, the last time the tax increased.
"With crumbling roads in Greater Minnesota and congestion in the Twin Cities, MnDOT doesn't have the resources to keep up," Pelowski said. "This is a comprehensive bill that begins to directly addresses our state's transportation needs."
The transportation bill doesn't just fund state roads. Cities and counties would also see more state money for local roads. For Cities, Winona would see $197,348 more per year and La Crescent would see $49,795. On the county side, Winona County would receive an increase of $993,563 and Houston County would get $720,447 more.
The transportation bill now heads to the Taxes Committee before going to the House floor.
