ST. PAUL - Representative Gene Pelowski of Winona said today's February Budget Forecast shows the state's budgeting needs outweigh resources. Counting inflation, the state has about $1 billion in one-time money and stays even for the next two years. Pelowski said the current budget only offers areas like education enough investment to keep up with inflation.
"The good news is there won't be any painful budget cuts this year; maybe even an opportunity for one-time investments," said Pelowski. "However, the state doesn't have the resources to restore the damage from 2003 that Minnesotans continue to feel through larger class sizes, higher property taxes, fees, and college tuition."
For his part, as chair of the House Governmental Operations, Reform, Technology and Elections Committee, Pelowski said he would look for ways government can save money.
