Would provide more than $300,000 for the port of Winona
ST. PAUL - A bill authored by Rep. Gene Pelowski of Winona to provide $5 million to Minnesota's ports, received primary approval from the House Transportation Finance and Policy Committee. The legislation provides the investment to the state's Port Development Assistance Program. Pelowski said the legislation could give the Port of Winona $331,902 for the barge fleeting harbor.
"From Duluth's link to Lake Superior to our ports on the Mississippi, shipping is a key part of Minnesota's economy," Pelowski said. "This legislation will help the ports make long-term investments to continue fueling our economy."
The committee voted to hold HF 612 over for consideration in the larger omnibus transportation bill. They will assemble that final bill in the coming months. In addition to the Winona project, the legislation provides funding for ports in Red Wing, St. Paul, and Duluth.
"There is a significant backlog of projects," Pelowski added. "We are trying to keep funds flowing so that ports can maintain their facilities and the use of our Mississippi River and Great Lakes waterway systems to move Minnesota products to the world market."
