PELOWSKI THANKS STUDENT FOR WEEK AS HOUSE PAGE

ST. PAUL - State Representative Gene Pelowski (DFL-Winona) extended his thanks to Joel Hanson, a junior at Winona Senior High School, for serving as a page in the Minnesota House of Representatives last week.

Hanson, who is a student of Rep. Pelowski's, attended a press conference in which Governor Pawlenty and Pelowski announced their plan to fold the Department of Employee Relations into other state agencies.

However, the highlight came on Thursday, when Hanson testified before the House K-12 Education Finance Committee with Rep. Pelowski to talk about how technology can be used in the classroom. Pelowski demonstrated how he uses a computer and video iPod to as a gateway to learning in his class. Hanson took questions from committee members about his experience in the classroom.

"His class is like no other you will experience in the high school," Hanson told the Committee. "Students that I've never seen inspired to learn history…light up, because he's catering to what they like to do in their free time."

Lawmakers and staff were so impressed with the presentation, some donated items to be photographed and included in Pelowski's digital social studies curriculum. One lawmaker,

Rep. Denise Dittrich of Champlin donated a Greek Orthodox icon.

"It was great to have Joel at the Capitol for the week," said Pelowski. "He was a help to me and other House members and was very professional when he testified before the committee."

Hanson called testifying before the committee an "unbelievable experience."

"I enjoyed my time paging," added Hanson. "And even though it was early, the committee meeting made it unforgettable. That was an unbelievable experience."

The Committee has asked Joel to come back at a future date to answer questions about testing in Minnesota schools.
