ST. PAUL - State Representative Gene Pelowski of Winona said the Governor's State of the State address today highlighted common goals.
"Supporting our veterans, improving schools, and making health care more affordable are goals shared by most, if not all Minnesotans," Pelowski said.
Pelowski, Chair of the House Government Operations Committee, said there appears to be a new tone to business at the State Capitol.
"We share the same goals for Minnesota," Pelowski said. "It's no longer about whether we do things like cover all kids with health insurance, it's about how.
Pelowski was impressed with the Governor's emphasis on using new technologies like the iPod in classrooms to reach students.
"In my job as a social studies teacher, I'm already using an iPod in my classroom instruction," Pelowski said. "You would be amazed at how it acts as a gateway to get my students interested in learning."
Pelowski did take some issue with the Governor's plans for property taxes.
"His call for a property tax cap in communities that rely on state aid would erode local control. There are better ways to permanently reduce property taxes."
Rep. Pelowski was pleased that the Governor appeared ready to talk about higher education and making it more accessible. One proposal would reward Minnesota high school students who take advanced placement classes with a free year of tuition at any public college or university, regardless of class rank.
"The high cost of tuition has made it a financial burden for most Minnesota students to attend college," added Pelowski, a member of the Education Finance Committee. "I'm looking forward to having more discussions about how to lower that burden."
