Representatives From Area Arc Programs Visit The Capitol

Representatives from Arc of Southeastern Minnesota traveled to St. Paul to participate in the annual Arc Minnesota's Day at the Capitol on January 27 to draw attention to the organization's 2005 Legislative Agenda and lobby legislators on behalf of persons with developmental disabilities and their families.
The group met with area legislators, including State Representative Gene Pelowski, of Winona.
"This legislative session, the state of Minnesota will again be faced with the question of how we treat the most vulnerable among us, including those with developmental disabilities," Pelowski said. " With the state facing a $1.4 billion budget deficit, organizations like Arc are going to be even more important in making sure that people with developmental disabilities and their families have a say in how they live, work and participate in our communities. I'd like to thank all the participants because they helped put a human face to the decisions we will make this year in St. Paul."
Pelowski said some of the key issues for those with developmental disabilities this year include reduction of the fee increases charged to families as a result of the 2003 state budget; maintaining options when it comes to at-home and adult foster care; and adequate payments to care providers.
"Minnesota has always been a leader when it comes to innovative programs that provide those with developmental disabilities a chance to live full and successful lives," Pelowski said. "We need to keep that in mind as we balance the budget and make sure our choices continue to provide for that."
