NEWS RELEASE

Rep. Bud Nornes Responds to Governor Dayton’s Budget Proposal

St. Paul – Governor Dayton released his budget proposal today and was joined by Commissioner Jim Schowalter, members of his Cabinet, and officials from Minnesota Management and Budget.

“Being the highest taxed state in the country does not allow Minnesota to put up a sign that says open for business, it might as well say business not welcome here,” said Rep. Nornes. “We have got to have more faith in our job creators and give them the tools to create jobs in this state, not give them a U-Haul truck and tax them on their way out.”

The Governor proposed tax increases and additional funding to government programs as well as increased funding to K-12 education.

“Governor Dayton is posting a sign in Minnesota saying business not welcome here. With tax increases like this we are slamming the door to new business and business expansion here in Minnesota taking jobs and the economy with them to other states,” said Rep. Nornes. “We cannot burden Minnesotans with tax increases like this and expect jobs to be created and the economy to turn around, it simply won’t happen.”

With Governor Dayton’s plan a 4th and 5th tier to the tax rate system would be added and the 4th tier would make us the second highest taxed state in the nation at 10.95% just shy of the highest states, Oregon and Hawaii, who are taxed at 11% each. Minnesota will be the highest taxed state in the nation at 13.95% with the 5th tier to the bracketing system.
