NEWS RELEASE

Rep. Bud Nornes Votes in Favor of Phase 1 Budget Bill

St. Paul – On Thursday night the Minnesota House of Representatives passed an early action budget bill, proposed by House Republicans who currently hold the majority. This bill is said to reduce the budget deficit by $1 billion. At the start of session three and a half weeks ago, a looming $6.2 billion deficit faced the State Legislature. And House Republicans aim to reduce that deficit with this budget bill.

“This bill will significantly reduce our budget deficit and put us on the right track to balancing our budget,” said Rep. Nornes. “We need to limit our spending and live within our means just like our hard-working Minnesota families do each day.”

The budget deficit totaled $5 billion in 2010 and the beginning of this session legislators are faced with a looming budget deficit of $6.2 billion in 2011. This bill also makes one-time reductions from this year permanent and it also would prevent state agencies from spending unnecessary funds at the end of the year.
