Local lottery figures released

Neighbor-

The Legislature has dispersed for Easter break. I will pass along a mid-session report soon, but first wanted to send some info regarding the lottery: Gross sales from Minnesota State Lottery were a record $481 million in fiscal year 2009. District 10A sales totaled $4.4 million last year.

The lottery is one of the rare areas that actually experienced growth during our economic recession. It's interesting how the lottery revenue hasn't been negatively affected when the rest of the economy is struggling.

The lottery is celebrating its 20th anniversary and its players have contributed more than $1.8 billion to state programs, including the General Fund, the Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund and others. State sales were a record $481 million in 2009, with $120 million returned to state programs.

From its 1990 inception through the end of 2009, sales in District 10A are $72 million. A total of $57 million were scratch tickets, while $15 million came from lotto games such as Powerball. Retailers in District 10A have earned $4.4 million in commissions and incentives since the lottery began.

These sales resulted in estimated contributions of $4.8 million to the Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund and $11 million to the General Fund. The Game and Fish Fund and Natural Resources Fund each received about $952,000.

In 2009, District 10A sales of scratch-off tickets exceeded $3.3 million and lotto games accounted for more than $1 million. The 43 businesses in the district that sell lottery tickets earned nearly $270,000 in commissions and incentives.

A chart showing exactly how the lottery revenue was appropriated can be found online at http://www.lottery.state.mn.us/moneygo.html.

Sincerely,
Bud
