LETTER TO THE EDITOR

BONDING COMMITTEE VISITS; HALLOWEEN SURVEY

To the editor-

The Senate Bonding Committee was in Otter Tail County this morning. I joined the committee members at Glendalough State Park for a trail presentation and then returned to Fergus Falls for consideration of a new bridge and ice arena project.

Sen. Skogen and I will be asked to carry legislation for these projects during the upcoming legislative session. I will pass along more information as things take shape.

On a different note, I read the results of an interesting Halloween poll on the Internet today and wanted to pass the information along; it could make for some good water-cooler talk this week.

Rasmussen Reports conducted the poll, gathering responses on a series of Halloween-related topics. Some of the poll's categories are non-controversial, like who is most inclined to hand out candy. Other questions probe a little deeper, like whether the name Halloween should be replaced with “Fall Festival” to escape negative connotations some may see in the traditional holiday's name. Two-thirds of the respondents say Halloween’s name should not be changed, while 19 percent indicate the name should be changed and the remaining 15 percent are not sure.

There also are questions relating to how Halloween should be handled in our public schools. This is good food for thought on various social levels. Here’s a link to the full report: http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/lifestyle/holidays/october_2009/66_see_no_need_to_change_halloween

Have a happy Halloween and keep those little ghosts and goblins safe.

Sincerely,
Bud Nornes
State Representative
