LETTER TO THE EDITOR

2009 session begins

To the editor

The 86th legislative session officially Jan.6. The swearing-in process took place on Day 1 and some other technicalities were covered. As usual, the gallery was full as family and friends witnessed the occasion.

We’ll get down to brass-tacks business in the days to come, but it felt good just returning to the House floor where we can tackle some of the real challenges our state is facing. The economy is the subject on everyone’s mind and that’s sure to lead the legislative news this session.

I prefer to keep a positive outlook on things and look at this as a time when we can make long-lasting improvements to benefit us for generations to come. A prime example is how we can boost the economy by spurring job growth in Greater Minnesota.

I’ll pass along news on this topic and others as things unfold over the next several months. Meantime, I recently received my new committee assignments and I will be the party lead on a Higher Ed. Committee. Here is the list:

• Early Childhood Finance and Policy Division
• Energy Finance and Policy Division
• Higher Education and Workforce Development Finance and Policy Division
• K-12 Education Policy and Oversight

For the most part, the Legislature will meet on the House floor Mondays and Thursdays during the early part of this session. Committee meetings will occupy the other days.

As always, feel free to provide me with your thoughts on the issues.

Sincerely,
Bud Nornes
State Rep.
