NEWS RELEASE

NORNES WORKING TO FIX GREEN ACRES

ST. PAUL – State Rep. Bud Nornes, R-Fergus Falls, is co-authoring a bill to repeal recent changes made to Green Acres, helping to protect property owners from potential tax hits and restoring the program to its previous form.

Green Acres has been in place for more than 40 years and provides farmers with tax incentives to keep their land agriculturally productive. The Omnibus Tax Bill passed in the final hours of the 2008 session and it included new tax penalties when certain Green Acres property is sold or transferred.

“The Green Acres classification change was not properly heard in the House Ag. Committee,” Nornes said. “The Ag. Committee certainly would have ironed out the details that are of great concern now. The best thing we can do now is to revisit Green Acres to eliminate problems that have arisen since changes were made last spring.”

State Rep. Rob Eastlund, R-Isanti, is the chief author of the bill restore Green Acres. Eastlund said he plans to introduce the bill to the Legislature the first day of the 2009 session.
